As a provider of custom engineered solutions, Eckhart has evolved from pencil on vellum, to 2D CAD, to 3D Solid modeling design tools. The shop has also transitioned technologically from manual Bridgeport mills to full CNC machining centers. Adapting to new tools, techniques, and technologies has been instrumental in sustainability in a very competitive manufacturing environment. In 1974, Harry A. Eckhart founded Eckhart & Associates, Inc. in Lansing, Michigan. Eckhart provided custom engineered solutions primarily for the automotive industry. Eckhart grew in experience and versatility, eventually adding electric and pneumatic controls capabilities to the mechanical design and manufacturing skills. In 1992, Eckhart moved to a 12,000 sq. ft. building and was able to expand its product and customer base. A greater emphasis was placed on assembly fixtures, semi-automated work stations, torque fastening systems and inspection equipment. During the 1990’s the automotive industry began a major push toward ergonomic parts handling equipment and torque reaction devices. Eckhart was at the forefront in creating custom designed ergonomic equipment to fill this need. In March of 2001, the company relocated to its current location which allowed Eckhart to bid on larger, more sophisticated projects, many of which required static and dynamic customer run-offs. Because of further growth in business, in April of 2007, Eckhart added a separate 7,200 sq. ft. facility on the existing property. This expanded the total square footage to nearly 40,000 sq. ft. Challenges and opportunities have been a part of Eckhart’s history from the beginning. Changing technologies, product mix, customer demands, improving quality, fierce competition, and an expanding customer base and geography have all been encountered and overcome over the years. Through it all Eckhart has prospered and looks forward to the future with every bit as much enthusiasm as Harry brought to his new company in 1974.
